I am trying to halter train my new soon to be two year old heifer. Her name is Tabatha. I have never halter trained anything before so I am a bit out of my element here. I do not have the strenth that I used to, I am recovering from a second trimester misscarage.
I think that things are going well. I have been going out there twice a day. At first I had a halter on her made of rope, that had no buckels on it, but it was all adjustable. She figured it out how to get it off. I was leaving it on her all day with the rope hanging down. I got her a new halter, I think it is called a turn out halter?
I think this one is helping alot (she cant get it off). Today was only the second day with a good halter on her, and I was able to go out to the corral and walk her into the barn. I dont know if this is good progress or not. I pulled on the rope until she took a step in the right direction, and then let the presser off and told her she was a good girl. There was a couple times that she tried to take off on me on the way, but as soon as I pulled on the rope she stopped. I think that is good.
after she had been in the stanchion, and had her treat, brushing and petting, I untied her she took off! I was able to stop her before she left the barn, but then she saw the other cattle outside and she took off again. I tryed to use the door frame to take on a bit of the blow, wich worked for a second and then another one of the cattle got tangled in the rope. It was too much for me to hold two large animals, and too much for the wall of the barn too! It detatched from the foundation. Great news Honey, after working 12hours you get to fix the barn! She got away. I think her getting away is going to realy mess things up.
How do I teach her not to take off like that? Is there a direction or angle that I can pull on to make it easier to keep her put? why did she do so well going to the barn and not so good leaving the barn? Am I expecting to much too soon?
I am very happy with her progress, she will let me stand closer than 6 feet when we are outside now, and she does not flintch when I start to pet her any more. If she is just tied up she still tries to get away from my hand If I go to pet her. She has never raised a hoof to me, but I am paranoid, so i have been petting her from the othe side of the milking stall. All in good time I guess.
Sorry for the rant. I dont have anyone here to help me out with this.
