A family wanted someone to take their 9 year old cat that they'd had from a kitten because their newest child was discovered to be allergic. We took "Chipper" in around the first of the year, and he seemed to do ok for awhile but in the last couple weeks has started urinating in the upstairs of our house. I've found at least 4 places with puddles. HOpefully there aren't more that I haven't discovered yet.
We have another cat and he chases her into hiding whenever he can find her. We have two separate litter boxes for them and keep them clean so he can't be not using them because they're too full.
Could he be marking his territory because of the other cat? The previous owner insists he's never done this before. Dh says we cannot keep a cat that is ruining our carpets so he will have to go if it doesn't stop. Right now we are keeping him outside during the day (it's warm here) and putting him in the basement at night. The basement is starting to smell so I think he is "marking" down there too.
On a related note, any ideas on how to train a cat to be less aggressive toward another cat? How to teach them to get along? We hoped after some weeks or months they would learn to tolerate each other but he seems to delight in tormenting her. We've tried spraying him with water in the midst of a chase but that doesn't seem to deter him any.
I will feel bad taking this cat to the shelter but that may be my only option since I can't honestly tell people he is housetrained!
Thanks for any advice.
