Jessika PM'd for advice on putting a weaner ring in her 10-m/o bull's nose. I send her this PM, and she suggested this be posted so others could see it, so...a little modified for a wider audience:
We put the ring on our borrowed bull in the stanchion though.
Does yours have a collar? If not, then I would get him into a stall, and try to drape one of those rope halters around his neck, or even any long piece of rope that you can make into a noose sort of, you know with a small loop on one end and then the long end threaded through the loop to create slippable loop. Even if he has a collar, you probably still need a rope on it to help you work with him.
Once you get the rope around him, I would pull his head up close to a post and wrap the rope around the post and then back around his snout and back around the post. Then once his head is immobilized, then you can pop the ring on his nose and tighten it up enough so that it does not fall out, but floats freely.
YOU MUST HAVE ANOTHER ADULT OR TWO TO HELP. PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS ON YOUR OWN.
If you cannot tie him to a post, then maybe you can herd him into the stanchion area and have the long end of the rope (assuming you got it around his neck) passed to someone on the other side of the head-gate and drag him in while someone goes up behind to push him in. then lock his head and you will still need someone to help hold his head and/or tie his head to the side of the headlock so you can get his head still enough to get the ring in his nose. If you need control of his head, then grab the end of his nose (on the top) with your hand, fingers on one side, thumb on the other, and dig your fingernails into his nose, he'll drop his head and be really still for you.
Good luck, please let me know how it goes and PLEASE be careful.
Also if you soak the weaner ring in hot water, it will be more pliable and easier to pop on his nose.
