Tomorrow Scarlette and Sugar go to their new home. We have anticipated this for several months and I have had time to adjust to the idea. I am thrilled that they are going to live with such wonderful folks as Joelle and her family.
What I did not anticipate was selling Dixie, but she is also going to a new home along with the two Jersey steers on Monday. Mike sold some hay today to one of our established hay customers who owned Jerseys until she divorced a few years back. At that time, she had to give up her dream and let her girls go. She spoke to Mike today about our Jersey girls. She really wanted a girl that was open that she could breed to an Angus bull.
The whole thing was kind of like one of those moments when everything seems to come together perfectly and you know that it's right. When Dixie calved in October, she had a big, bull calf and we had to help her by pulling it. At that time, Buxom made the observation that it would probably be best if we bred her to an Angus instead of a Jersey because she has the genetics to throw a big calf. (Buxom explained it all beautifully and I am not doing her justice here, but if anyone is interested, PM me and I can go back and find the thread for you.) Buxom also brought up the fact that by breeding her to a miniature Jersey bull, that she would not have the problems calving but her female offspring could have a problem later on. The lady that bought Dixie wants to breed her to a low-birthweight Angus bull and use the calves for beef. It was just like it was meant to be. The bonus is that the lady just lives down the road from the farm and I will be able to see Dixie and keep up with how she is doing.
Dixie and her calf Tater and the other Jersey steer, BS will be going to their new home on Monday.
The only part of this that really stinks is that I took a $500 loss on her and didn't even get a heifer calf from her! I am consoled knowing she is going to a great home and will be loved. She is a sweet, sweet girl.
