Hello everyone, my name is Amy. My husband Stephen and I purchased our small 14 acre property last October and have been slowly adding animals.
We are living in NW N. Carolina, close to the VA and TN borders in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains.
We started of with 27 chickens, that is going great, we are getting over a dozen fresh eggs daily! Our friends are also giving us their horse Jasper the first week of January. We are thrilled, we love him and he will make a nice addition to our little homestead :-) And we have recently after searching for over a year found and put a deposit on a 9 month old Mini Jersey Heifer.
We only have 2 acres of grazing land right now, still a lot of clearing to do.
I must admit I am a bit nervous, I have no experience with cows, but willing to learn, and her small size makes her a bit less intimidating.
We went out to see her yesterday, and she is beautiful! BUT she seemed pretty nervous, and not real accustomed to the halter. Is that pretty typical for a 9 month old heifer?
We plan to have her AI in June when she is 15 months old. So no milk for us until spring 2010! We are still considering maybe taking her mama instead who is currently pregnant, although she just was'nt as pretty as the heifer, and I am not feeling confident enough yet to deal with a bull, if the mama has one.
Any advice? How should I go about halter training her? She is about 32 inches right now, her mama is 36.
Also she has horns, should they be removed?
I am trying to learn all I can, I feel like a new mother, so nervous, and worried that I am going to do something wrong!
Anyway here is a link to my blog, there are some fun pics! www.homesteadblogger.com/livingthegoodlife/
