I am just beside myself.
I posted about Maya coming down with what we thought was milk fever but yet it just didn't look exactly like milk fever. We treated her Sat. Sunday she seemed a little better but walks as if her legs are stiff rather than wobbly. Then, Monday morning, she seemed much worse. She never went down but looked terrible and was weak and could hardly walk. I called the vet. He came out and treated her for milk fever. I told him I didn't think it was milk fever. I suggested Ketosis. He treated her for both. (See thread in the family cow section for more detail.)
Today Maya is holding her own, but not really any better. She nibbles a little grain but doesn't have much of an appetite. Initial blood work showed nothing wrong and she has a great physical as far as uterine and cervix, lungs, heart, etc. Her calf is healthy and boucing around.
As if that were not enough, this morning when I went out, I found Butter Cupp down. I did not post this earlier because I needed time to process the information, try to figure out what was going on and contact the lady who has a deposit on her and let her know what is going on. Another vet came out today. He immediately thought it was milk fever and I told him I didnt' think so. (I know the vets must think I am crazy telling them this but she did not have cold ears, her temp was normal, her eyes were clear. She looked perfect. She just couldn't get up. He treated her for MF but she didn't get up.
I made him go look at Maya whom he had been told had been treated for MF and when he saw her, he agreed that something was going on other than MF but he didn't know what. All the blood work from both cows came back fine. All the other cows seem healthy, the calves are thriving and the two cows don't have identical symptoms. Maya looks like crap and her legs don't want to bend normal and she walks funny and weak. Butter looks wonderful and healthy but she can't get up.
Is there a correlation? What is going on?
I have been searching for answers all day and searching the net. I am wondering about some sort of poisoning or aflatoxin. I mentioned this to the vets but although they were trying to be nice, I am sure they think I am crazy. I am searching here. I need answers.
The vet has already given up. He told my husband that WHEN not IF she dies he suggests an autopsy. My husband also does not have much hope for her. We are trying to get a sling to get her up so that maybe we can save her. We also gave her charcoal in case it was some sort of poisoning. I'm not giving up yet.
I am not making sense probably, but I will try to add more as I think of it.
