If there's anything left to pick, that is!
I was just reading Lisa in NH's thread about breeding her girl, and a few things jumped out at me. I didn't want to hijack her thread so I thought I'd just ask in a new thread.
We got Estrumate to get Bandit into heat. The vet told me that I should give her the shot, then wait 3 days to take her to the bull. When I talked to the guy with the bull, he said that was foolish, because we might miss her heat (and I completely agree). I was planning on giving her the shot on the 29th, then taking her over to the bull on December 1st.
You said something in that other thread (and admittedly, you were talking about Lute) that heat can commence anywhere from 24 to 72 hours after the shot. Which is making me wonder if I shouldn't give her the shot and then take her over the next day.
Also, there was some talk about using two shots, a week apart, and breeding them when they come into heat after the 2nd shot.
I did get two doses of the Estrumate, but the vet said I should only need one.
In your considered opinion, if you're familiar with the Estrumate, is one shot usually sufficient? Does it act differently than the Lute in any way (i.e. heat comes on later)? And just so I don't panic later, what is the normal course of events when Bandit does get bred? Will she have a bleed off after the heat she's bred on? I'm not clear on that with all the reading I've been doing lately. If there is blood a day or two later, is that normal or does it mean she didn't settle? I know blood 3 weeks after breeding would mean she didn't settle, but I'm not clear on the breeding heat and what actually happens. It seems to me that if the egg was fertilized, there should be no blood on that breeding heat, but a few things I've read here and there have me confused on that now. Can you help me? Pretty please?
