We have had Daisy for a year and the responsibilty is much more than we thought it would be. From what I read on here I think we have actually had a pretty easy time of it but it still seems like too much. My husband is too busy with work, I am pregnant with our 10th baby and severely anemic so am sick much of the time, and our 14 year old who we mainly depend on to handle all our cow responsibilities has not really been doing it the way we want him too. We are getting tired of the struggle to make sure it is all done right. She has been a dream of a cow, especially after reading some of the stories some of you have had with your first cow. And, this summer she figured out how to get thru the fence and now it is nearly impossible to keep her in and away from her calf who is staked outside of the fence. We had them together until recently when he got too big for his green weaning ring and figured out how to nurse anyway. It may also be because towards the end of the summer we were staking her outside of the fence so she could eat the grass in our yard. Mainly because she was low on grass in her field and we didn't want to spend the money to mow with gas prices the way they were. We have considered handing over the responsibilty to one of the other children but I really don't want the struggle to start all over with another child. I just don't have it in me, and my husband doesn't have the interest. When we started this endeavor he said he would fund it all but that was all that he wanted to put into it. He did feel sorry for her and built her a pretty nice barn. So, I know we may not get what we paid and then with what we put into the barn and fencing we will be taking a loss but I would like to find out how much she is worth. She is bred and about 5 years old. She is a dream hand milker, even with all the kids and more running around. What do you think?
