Okay... we're milking zella around 8am and 5:30pm every day... I have to go by the light outside because we have no light out in the pasture unless its a full moon
Anyway, because of the longer time between night and morning milkings, we get most of our milk in the mornings... 2 gallons each morning and one - one and a half each evening.
I am continuing to use the milker I bought, but I only use it to relieve the pressure on the rear teats in the mornings... I get two qts out of each rear teat and then hand milk the rest of them.
I am getting very slight yellowish blobs in the milk... after our experience with mastitis I'll admit it makes me a bit nervous. But, our butter is bright yellow and we get a quart of cream on the top of every gallon.
so... if you see something that you think might maybe possibly be the first hint of mastitis, what do you do? do you immediately start milking an extra time to keep her cleaned out? do you just watch it and see what it does? How do I know when to do something about it without waiting until its too late?
other than that, things are going great. Shes such a friendly thing and we are really loving having her around. Its a pain to go out in the cold.. I hate cold... but once I get out there its not so bad at all and I dont even notice that my hands are cold until I come in and they start to warm up
we're making yogurt once a week and cheese twice a week and butter every couple of days or so. Im hoping to make sour cream one time soon.
