Hi!
I have a heifer-Daisy- that I have raised from 3 weeks old. She is about 18 months now, and I have been trying to get her bred by AI to Lowline Angus bull, Lisbon 29L for the past few heats. I have one more straw left of semen. I had been keeping track of all 3 of our cows heats all summer and they have been really regular every 21 days. The only problem was that show signs of heat for a longer time than all the rest. She would start to have difficult behavior towards the end of one week, then try to mount me and be loving on me on Sunday afternoon with great regularity. So the first time I had her bred, it was on a Monday morning, and he didn't think she was in good heat, but a few days later, I actually saw one of our other cows ( Sunny) loving on her and mounting her which I had never seen her do before, so had her bred again the next day and he said it was really good timing that time. But 3 weeks later, on a Sunday, she was trying to mount me again, and that week her vulva swelled up again. I didn't have her bred on that one, because I am afraid of causing a miscarriage just in case it is a false heat, but 3 weeks later, she didn't show any signs of heat- didn't jump on me on Sunday as was her habit or anything, so I thought for sure she was pregnant, until suddenly on Thursday ( 6weeks after the last time bred ) she was going crazy trying to mount me and Sunny ( who wasn't having any of it), so I had her bred late that afternoon and he said she seemed to be in good heat. She has had a few times of slightly odd behavior in the past few weeks that I wasn't sure if maybe she was pregnant and just having false heats--- one day she was really dull eyed and not herself for a whole day-- usually she is very alert and cares alot about everything-- and just a few days ago (less than a week after being bred the 3rd time) she wasn't interested in her grain when I brought it out-- the only other time she does that is when she is in heat. I know they are little things, but they keep making me wonder if she could be pregnant because I know the hormones from pregnancy always throw me for a loop and make me a bit duller and change my appetite ( do cows get nauseous? ;D) My question is should I biotrack her before she has time to come into heat again or just keep breeding her when I see her come into heat? Her standing heats usually seem to be in the early afternoon, and my AI tech works 9a-5p, should I have her bred later that day or the morning after? On the positive side, our beef cow, Sunny, was bred, to the same bull, the first time we had the AI tech out and hasn't shown any signs of heat since. Thanks for any help!
