One cow left yesterday and five left just now. This was one of the best crops of first calf heifers dad has ever calved out. Good udders, quick to learn the routine, very little stepping, just all around a pleasant group. We had to sell down before winter came on, since dad was milking 27 cows in a 23 stall barn. Since we don't have any freestalls, that means we can't have any more milking then can be left in the barn.
We knew it had to happened, but had hoped to move some older cows instead.
They aren't going far though. The first calf heifer that left yesterday has gone onto a local Amish family to be their family cow. I will drive past her twice every Friday as I head to work and back.
The other five first calf heifers went to another dairy farmer, who also lives on my way to work, and who is currently milking Sigil. He just started up his Grade A dairy again and is milking a number of beef crosses, as well as a Jersey, Guernsey and various crosses. Now he has some Jersey/Norwegian Reds in the mix along with two more registered Jerseys.
Sigil (7/8 Jersey, 1/8 Norwegian Red, Clarion X Olympian) was sold earlier this Summer;
Cassandra (purebred Jersey, Maximus X Advent) went to the young Amish family;
The following five went to the small Grade A dairy-
Calisto (Purebred Jersey, Topkick X Londonderry {herd bull out of Lester});
Best I could fine of Calisto with an udder. She's standing behind Sigil in labor. Delivered a dead heifer, so I never got a calf and cow shot. She was an obese heifer, so no surprise about the dead calf.
Freedom's Song (Purebred Jersey, Freedom {bad, bad udder bull!} X Alf {dam's udder was almost perfect});
Dasha (3/4 Jersey, 1/4 Norwegian Red, Jason {herd bull out of Jace} X El Tigre {Herd bull out of Myrher-P <~NR})
Electra (3/4 Jersey, 1/4 Norwegian Red, Same sire line-up as Dasha, different dam line)
Electra on right. The day before calving.
Lucille (7/8 Jersey, 1/8 Norwegian Red, Mariner X El Tigre {see Dasha})
Lucille was 22 months old when she calved.
They went locally and it was quick. They have gone to good places where they will be well cared for. What more can one ask?
