I was nudged into an update thread for everyone on Rori. last you heard, we were waiting and seeing. we waited and she is still with us! weeks after stopping he antibiotics, after 2 solid weeks of Probios, she is just on regular feed and is doing great! she hasn't come all the way back up to her 4+ gallons a day, but it is almost there. the subcutaneous emphysema is slowly lessening. its creepy, so i try not to touch her on her left side. occasionally i will forget and let my hand rest there as she walks past and the sound/ feel scares me.
we are so thankful for her every day. my beautiful jersey! it is hard to believe all that has transpired since she calved. thank you all for helping us through.
as for Nim's udder lesions... i shake my fist in her general direction. i have stopped treating them because it doesn't help, it just grosses me out twice a day. i may take a good look tonight and see if they are the same or worse or better. i have tried EVERYTHING. i am so done with her. i am not milking her, just putting her with the calves all day and separating at night so she can be with Rori.
we were looking into a third calf for her. no luck there. a jersey bull calf may be born soon at a local dairy, he would be 70 bucks. the holstein calf guy wouldn't budge on $125 so i declined. the market is so off there is no way a bull calf here is worth that. we just spent almost $300 on hay for the winter yesterday so i fear any calf may be out of our price range now. oh, well! i was hoping someone would have an orphan, a calf they might be glad to get rid of, but no such luck.
