My name is Dawn and I've been lurking for a while, doing lots of research on getting my first milk cow.
I live on my Grandpa's Farm now, I grew up here. It's very small, only 1.4 acres. You'd be surprised what can be done on this sized lot. It was built in 1947 and was set up for 50+chickens, 1 cow, 2 goats, and a 100x55' garden, with one acre of irrigated pasture crossfenced. Besides the 900sf house, there's a pumphouse, garden shed, henhouse, workshop, milking barn, and a woodshed--which last year I turned into a 450sf cottage since we don't have the woodstove since the remodel.

Since Grandpa passed a few years ago, I've been repatriating this little place of my heritage. Next is a milk cow. Being as I have a horse, which it wasn't set up for and the pasture couldn't handle a horse *and* a full sized cow, I am very interested in the Dexter breed.
I am in contact with a breeder that has some heifers he is weaning and will be halter training next week and will call me with which has the best temperament. It will be spring 2010 before I have milk! But I will still love working with her until then.
I just got KFC (along with Family Cow from 1976 and Making Cheese, Yogurt, and Butter by Ricki Carrol) from ebay and am so looking forward to reading next week.
I also work, and have 50 hens, two dogs, a cat, a horse, and I have a wildlife permit and keep a rescued bobcat and cougar. Very busy, many think I'm crazy, but I think I fit right in with you guys and that you all understand this kind of crazy, right?
Thanks for this forum and thanks for listening!
