I have a friend who recently moved "out to the country" and they just started drinking raw milk this week. She emailed me last night saying that a couple of her children have been sick and wondering if it could be related to the milk. Here is what she said:
-------------------------
We went to church on Sunday (possible exposure to a virus).
We starting drinking raw milk for the first time on Tuesday (possible exposure to bacteria).
C (2 yo boy) got flu-like symptoms on Wednesday.
M (10 yo boy) got flu-like symptoms on Thursday.
The girls are fine for now, and I’m not a milk drinker, though I had it in ice cream and cooked in Indian food, and I am fine.
Is it at all possible that C's constant diarrhea could be raw-milk related? He still has it and it is bad. Of course, I want it to be a virus, and it seems to be a virus since not everyone has it, but I want to be absolutely sure it isn’t contamination, as it’s very unusual for him to have diarrhea (I don’t think he’s ever had it and he’s had many colds and stomach flus). Could be that he is reacting to the heavy cream (yes, I skimmed it off before they drank)? I’d say so….EXCEPT….that he had a fever. That is worrisome to me. Is it 100% certain that everyone would be sick at the same time if they drank the same milk-were it contaminated-- on the same day? M has fever and chills and is pretty bad, but no diarrhea, and he won’t eat due to nausea.
Am I overlooking anything, my raw milk friends? Yes, I visited my milk source and they are very very clean.
---------------------------------------------
I was thinking that diarrhea in the 2 yo could be milk-related if he is drinking a lot and has never had it before, but the other stuff I would tend to think is unrelated. They have 5 children that drank it and only the 2 are sick. Input?
