So, I'm just minding my own business yesterday morning answering emails and reading KFC. I notice I have a message and it's Milkmaid (whose home is about 40 miles from mine-she's at school in Laramie now though) telling me she was reading the paper and came across an ad for a first time freshening Jersey cow, gives about 5 gallons per day and is quiet int he barn. She's too little to compete at the small commercial (cheese) dairy. I put it out of my head...there's no rational reason why I NEED another cow. GInger seems well and I can start milking her any day. At about 1pm I call and talk to the farmer's wife at about 1:15 I'm in the pick up calling my DH to tell him what I'm doing. He said "Don't take the trailer" I said "too late".
So now we have Ingrid. She was great for the new milking experince in my barn last night and this morning. I don't have a stanchion, just a horse stall with rubber mats on the floor. She's not real excited about my cow chow but went after the sprouted barley. She's teeny, the belly milker can practically be set on the ground! She's also very young, I don't know how old they have to be to become fertile but she was definitely a teenage mother...The farmer said she calved without any help. I saw the little heifer the little tiny pen dairy farmers use and almost offered to take her and raise her for him, she looked so pitiful (and skinny/tiny). He'd probably think I was crazy if I offered.
So now I have to think up a new bovine plan. Maybe get Ginger bred ASAP and wait until spring to breed Ingrid. THe best I can figure she is barely 2 years old...
OK about pictures, I have them taken but Photobucket doesn't know who I am anymore. It doesn't recognize my username, I don't recieve the email they say they send to change all that stuff and I can't set up a new account because my email address already has an account ascribed to it. It's maddening...Is there another website I can post pictures from? Any ideas?
Thanks to everyone here, you're the only ones who won't think I'm crazy...My husband thinks it's hormonal .
