I picked up a small flock of chickens from a trusted friend yesterday for my boss. As they were being caught and loaded, she noticed one had an injury (?) on one foot (is that the proper term?). At that point she offered to keep them if that was a deal breaker. I said nah, I'd post and find out. The flock is in "quarantine" until we figure out what is going on. They were to be introduced into a flock of 132 pullets. These being 2-3 year old hens and a 1 year old rooster.
Here are some pictures. About the best I could do since I had to hold said hen (after finally catching it) and take pictures at the same time. It is the right foot.
Side view;
Blurry bottom view;
Top view (shows the abcess, pustule type things);
Side view;
In the last shot the chicken is facing the opposite direction. That bloody spot had just ruptured recently. It was more bloody today, but that probably has a lot to do with me chasing her.
I do not know much about chickens. Period.
Does this look like it could be an injury? Or is there a disease in chickens that presents like this?
Another question, completely unrelated to the above questions. My boss bought a large number of peeps in March/April. They are laying now. I was farm sitting and picking them up to set on the roosts, so they would learn to go up to roost (a large portion crowd on the floor). One I picked up was very thin. The feathers underneath were damp looking. It did not look healthy. She normally free ranges, but due to predation issues, this particular group hasn't been out as much. I'm thinking maybe coccidiosis? Worms? I assume chickens can get these things and would be at am increased chance due to the lack of free ranging, for now. She would prefer organic, but is not opposed to doing what is necessary to save animals.
Is there something that can be done? There are 132 hens in the "Chicken Chateua."
Thanks for all your input and advice. Please feel free to ask more specific questions for clarification. As you can see, I don't know chickens!
