What a wonderful site.
My name is Carl Russell. My wife Lisa McCrory and I live in Bethel, Vermont. We own and operate Earthwise Farm & Forest, a small scale diversified enterprise on 160 acres of central Vermont hillside. We raise most of our own food, and sell some surplus grass fed poultry, beef, and pork, vegetables, raw milk, and a variety of forest products. We live off-grid in a home we built ourselves with material from the land. We use exclusively oxen and horses for all motive power. We have also begun to augment our income by developing workshops that help people to gain the skills for earth based livelihoods, including the use of draft animals, woodlot management, spiritual gardening, and on-farm slaughter.
A couple of years ago we decided that there was a burgeoning need for a regional gathering that provided social and educational opportunities for folks who are practicing low consumption small scale agricultural and forestry enterprises. Because we feel strongly that draft animals are a natural component of sustainable and renewable land-use practices, we maintain a focus on working horses, mules, and oxen. The Northeast Animal-Power Field Days is about more than hooves and harnesses, as we are working to develop a premiere agricultural educational and cultural event. You can learn more by visiting www.animalpowerfielddays.org
Also as a result of last year's gathering, we developed an on-line discussion forum focusing the use of draft animals, sustainable land-use, community, and energy. Please join in our discussions at www.draftanimalpower.com
I have the capacity of creating a link from our site to this one, if the moderators would like to explore that please contact me.
Great to see all this great work going on here. Keep it up, Carl
