Hi - I'm a new reader, this is my first post (to any website, for that matter!). What a wonderful site - I found you because I couldn't find My Family Cow book and wanted to look up some info.
I have a delightful older gal, Freckles, 10, a Milking Shorthorn who freshened about a month ago. I've been treating her for the last couple of weeks for several different symptoms. She is a roan, mostly white, so has trouble with her bag getting sunburned, which makes keeping her teats in good condition a challenge. They've been sunburned, plus she cut one with her hoof, and now today, her front two quarters have little round scabbed spots on them, about half the size of a pea to pea-sized. Her back quarters are clear, her bag is clear, but now we have these spots on her poor already sunburned front quarters.
Saturday, she had a temp of 105. No mastitis, is a little off her feed but is definitely eating, chewing cud, drinking, manure's a little loose but not much, etc. She is a good producer and we are alternating hand milking and calves as needed, but are going easy because of her apparently compromised condition. I suspected metritis, since she's had a tendency toward retainage in the past combined with the fever and evidence of passing some old afterbirth at about two weeks fresh (it didn't have bad smell though). So we've been treating her for infection just in case - no antibiotics, just natural treatment and homeopathics, etc. When we stay on top of the treatment, the fever recedes - 102 today.
But now - spots - nowhere else, just on the front quarters. I don't think it's cowpox, pseudo cowpox, that is, but I don't know what to think. Her udder IS very sensitive and of course, the front two get the most sun but I'm concerned because of the way the last two weeks have been going, plus the fact that she's never done this before (she's also never been 10 before )
Anybody have any ideas? I'd love to hear from you.
