My mini-jersey bull got me up into the air and slammed into the fence today. The cattle panel was bent in pretty well! I'm grateful that it was the fence and not the ground, and that my husband was right there. I never fell over, and once I was on my feet (instead of 3 feet up in the air) I gave Fin several good whacks across the nose with the stick I was carrying.
He's pretty tame and is sort of halter trained. I am used to walking up to him in the field and giving him a good scratch. But here's where I went wrong: one of the cows is in heat so he was already riled up. We needed to move him, the steer, and another young heifer this morning so we were trying to isolate them from the rest of the herd. Fin was snorting, pawing the ground, kinda growling, etc. But he's done this before and I always just scold him until he stops. Another thing that was different this time was that my husband was nearby, using a bucket of grain to lure the new jersey girls out of the way. Fin doesn't much like my husband. So I walked up to Fin to grab his collar and he just hit me HARD! I remember being up in the air and screaming for my husband to help. By the time Chris got through the gate Fin had backed off. I consider myself very lucky. I'm really glad the fence was there to keep me from falling over and I'm also glad it was a flexible fence! I have a severe bruise on my thigh and some other smaller sore spots, but of course my whole body is stiff and sore now. Lesson well learned!
I guess I'll have to go for the nose ring now I need to be able to move him and get him into a trailer. Anyone have any experience with this?
Oh, and we did eventually get him moved where we needed to so at least that was a success.
UPDATE*****Just to drive the point home, here's my leg two days later.
Fin is completely changed. He's just a mess of hormones, poor thing, and is pawing, growling, and snorting at everyone he sees. He's around 19 months old, and I'm sure now that he is undergoing the change that everyone talks about.
