After all these months of not being able to get a halter on Bandit, I went out this afternoon and just put it on her. She took a step away from me, but I scritched her, reached my arm over, grabbed the crown strap and slid it right onto her fat face. The only problem is it's too small now. I did manage to get the buckle done, on the loosest hole, but wow, it's too tight! She stood like a champ while I checked all over to see if I had something twisted, but I had it on right. Then I took it back off (duh!) and she went back to her grazing. Hey, at least now she knows it won't eat her face off!
When we first brought her home, this halter was way too big. The chain part wouldn't even snug up all the way - there was a foot of chain hanging under her chin and it was bottomed out. I was actually concerned that it might still be too big, but the chin is so tight I doubt she'd be able to open her mouth to eat, and the part that goes under her jowels is WAY too tight. Not quite choking tight, but pretty close.
I got a "cow size" halter, and she's half Jersey fer cryin' out loud, so she shouldn't be bigger than "cow size," should she? It's not like she's a Brown Swiss or anything. Is there any measurement I can take on her that would indicate what her halter size should be? It's 100 miles to the store with the halters and I really don't want to have to make 2 or 3 trips until I get the right one. I don't have a beef and/or dairy tape, so I have no idea what she weighs. I guess I just didn't notice how much she'd grown in the last year... well, I did notice that she's about a foot longer than she used to be. When I brush her, my hand gets to where it thinks should be the end, and there's another foot of her. LOL!
Does anybody have any ideas? Or should I just see if I can find "cow, extra fat head" size?
