Dang it. We bought an already bred Flemish Giant doe and a buck to go with her. She had her litter and we lost every single one. After reading another post on here, I'm wondering if the guy bred her too young. I'd a thought not, seeing as his rabbitry is HUGE and he raises a lot of diff. types of rabbits.
At any rate, these guys are about 8 months old now. She had 8 babies that I found. Looks like she may have chewed a few.
My DH picked her up by the back of her neck on Sat. to show someone her full size and I yelled over to him to support her bottom as she was due so soon. He said, "she's fine". Which meant, "no way, I don't know how to handle rabbits, this one is huge and I don't want to get scratched". I was really disappointed that he did that though and asked him not to pick her up again if he couldn't learn to hold her correctly. I know he likes to show off his 'farm' but people can just walk in and SEE the rabbits in their cages if they want to see them. I don't know if his act caused her to have problems with the litter or what. She had plenty of food and fresh water and a box to whelp them in, which she did with at least two of them (maybe the others too, I don't know) and the weather is nice right now...not too cold or too warm for her to give birth. She's also in a nice, quiet area in her own large cage.
These are our first 'meat' rabbits and we're not all that experienced with the other rabbits either but have been having successful litters at least. She weighs about 18 lbs and I just really feel like he shouldn't have lifted her that way so close to being due.
Any suggestions here? I'd like to give her a little rest and then rebreed her, however, the weather is going to be heating up here really soon and I'm not sure she would appreciate being pregnant in such terrible heat. We weren't going to breed any of the rabbits to birth during June, July or August.
