In the last week, we found out our butcher is stealing our meat, the brakes failed in our new van and my husband and daughter drove through a big window at the local store, our heifer almost died upside down in the hayfeeder, I have a herniated disc in my back and guess what happened tonight?
I convinced my daughter to feed the pigs in the barn for me so I could rest my back just once, and she comes screaming in the house, " The dog has wounded a coyote in the barn and the cats are missing!" We have a great big giant of a dog, Great Pyrenees/ Newfoundland cross. He is very devoted to our family and animals but has no killer instinct, At least that is what I thought!I run to the barn in flip flops, ( that was all I could find)
and there is a young coyote, obviously mortally wounded, and 2 cats missing. Our dog looked fine except his bandanna was shredded. A few minutes later a neighbor arrived and shot it. My daughter was crying as these cats are more than barn cats. We lock them safely in the barn every night because we love them so much. Our dog sleeps with them all the time too, so we knew that the coyote killing them must have been what set him off to actually attack the coyote. The coyote was young and the weather is harsh and he looked very healthy. I don't think he had rabies, I think he just was desperate and made a mistake to go in the barn. Our dog is uptodate on rabies anyway, he should be fine, right?
Here's the good news as we were leaving I spied the missing cats hiding up in the barn rafters! They are all accounted for and we are so proud of Cinder, our dog for protecting his animals!
We have so many things to be thankful for lately, I feel blessed!
Even if I did get the 4x4 truck stuck in the ditch this afternoon because I was watching pigs instead of the road!
