My internet has been dead for a month (we have satellite internet) and a total disaster work-wise and family cow board wise!!
Last week my DH yells up to me while upstairs with the baby that there's a dog killing our chickens! Grabbing the baby and followed by two 6 year olds (my son had a friend over) we run outside, my husband tearing off for the shotgun. As I get towards the coop my absolute favorite Plymouth Rock hen comes folornly, sadly waddling up to the house with all her bottom feathers gone and big scratches (teeth marks) on her posterior. She looks so sad and it's just gotten so cold, I feel awful! Meanwhile I head to the coop where I find no chickens, an overturned metal waterer and big clumps of Plymouth Rock feathers all over. No sign of the dog.
The kids go off and after looking around for a while we go back in. About 30 min. later I hear a crashing noise in the shed right outside our door and open it to see a dog in the shed going for my cat! I scream at the dog and throw some sticks at it and it won't run and starts barking hysterically. I yelled for DH and he runs out with the shotgun, he says "it's ANOTHER dog!", I grab the cat and go in with the baby. Then I hear my DH yelling towards the kids who are in the front of the house out of sight and he runs off, I think "Oh God! The other dog is attacking the children!" He comes back and the dog I scared out of the shed is still right there waiting barking and growling like crazy at our cow and then at my husband on his return (the kids were fine, just locked themselves into the sugar shack and chose just that moment to do so!).
Well, my DH shot the dog in the end as it would not scare and was growling and baring it's teeth at him, it was awful. I wouldn't want any animal to suffer at my hand but I don't feel we had a choice. Still, it was a beautiful dog. It's pretty creepy there's another one out there somewhere.
We lost 2 chickens. One killed and carried off, the other (a rooster) scared off and I saw him yesterday but her wouldn't come near the house and we had an ice-storm last night so he's probably a goner, very sad way to go. Plus my injured and bald hen who is looking unwell. Not to mention a huge amount of stress!
I'm sure they were poorly trained hunting dogs let loose and lost. Have not heard from anyone about them, we'll see.
