Hi all! I would like you to meet Coyote...
I got a call over the weekend to see if I would take this dog as he was miserable where he was (in the city, trapped in a tiny pen 24/7). I agreed to it over the phone (SUCKER ) as long as the cows where OK with it. So I went and picked him up and was shocked at the bad shape he was in. He is missing fur...
and his skin is dry, flaky, and in places it is overly thick and raised...
and he started peeing blood and he hardly eats.
So off to the vet we went. We got a sadly short vet visit and minimal checkup (I'm starting to not like vets more and more).
The vet gave me antibiotics for a UTI and wanted to do a steriod shot for the skin. I took the antibiotics and started him on them but skipped the shot.
Here's my questions
1. Can you give dogs probiotics? If yes how and what kind? I tried giving him keifer and he turned up his nose to it.
2. This may sound stupid but what is a dog's ideal diet? At this point I don't have an abundance of raw meat to give him so I will have to rely on some dog food. Any suggestions to brand. THe only thing his old owners ever gave him was Ole Roy from Walmart. Could this be part of his skin problem, lack of nutrients amd oils? I was trying to think of a healthy daily food mix (raw eggs, oils, meats good quality dog food, etc) I have owned dogs my whole life except the last few years when I got into raw foods and growing my own. Now that I know more I feel my pets also deserve better foods.
3.Heather if you are around or anybody else. He has been wormed recently but I would like to avoid the heart worm pills if possible. What is a good medical (natural if possible) routine for a dog?
Any other info is welcome also. He is a real sweetheart. For being a cattle dog he never barks, chases or acts interested in any way in the cows or chickens (although if left to their own my cows would have stomped him Yikes). He stays right by my side at all times. He sits, stays and comes when called, plays fetch with the kids and pleasantly tolerates my 2 year old's sqeeling and chasing. I can't believe people neglect animals so bad.....
Anyway, thanks everyone.
