I finally got a response from somebody with milk cows in Colorado, and this is what I got...
"We do have a couple of cows that we would be willing to sell. Tillie is 7 years old. She had a few minor mastitis issues on her last lactation but seems to be doing fine this round. We don't know if she is bred or not. She last calved on August 26th. The vet did preg checks on March 13th and she was open. We saw her in heat and with the bull on April 10th and haven't seen any heat since so I suspect she is bred now. We run a bull with the milk cows. We would let her go for $1200.
The other cow is Wailer. She is 4 years old. We do not have a good shelter for our cows and both of the last two winters she had frost bite on the end of her teats. It hasn't caused any long term damage, but we don't want to deal with it this year. If you have a good indoor spot for her, she would be a perfect family cow. She has good teats for hand milking and she is everyone's favorite cow because she is so friendly. She is bred and is dry right now. I haven't looked at her in the last few days to see if she's getting close to calving, but if you're interested I'll take a look and see about how long it might be. She's $1500. "
Should I buy one of these cows? They are both Jerseys. I don't want to buy a problem, but also don't want to pass up an opportunity to get a cow because I haven't been having a lot of luck with finding one so far. What do you all think?
There is also an opportunity to get a shortleg Dexter, but she has never been milked, has her 2nd calf on her. She has just been a breeder, so not socialized, but was halter broke as a calf. Is it worth it? Should I just be patient? A VERY hard thing to do.
Thank you for your input,
Wendy
