Ok-Sally Fallon's book "Nourishing Traditions" goes on and on about how wonderful cod liver oil is for you, and breezily suggests that it will go down easily in a glass of orange juice. I'm sorry, but NOT in this family!! I tried it first, out of sight, and did my best not to gag, then served it to Hubby, who suspiciously asked what the oily residue was on his OJ. I smiled sweetly and told him just to drink it. He gulped his juice, like normal-and then nearly spit it all over! He said it tasted like rotten fish. Didn't even try the kids, don't think I will. Also-it mentions that it shouldn't exceed a tsp/day for long periods for children due to often toxic effects (which I was concerned about, Vit A being fat soluble)-so how do I know how long to give it? It also says the effects aren't very great without being served in conjunction with butter from cows grazing on fresh grass-next year I will save some summer butter, but at the moment-all I have is butter from cows on hay!
I'm trying to add in healthier ways of eating, and hoping they will eventually help me crowd out my terrible sugar addiction, and also-I am having some troubles with emotions, I wonder if it may be related to a Vit B deficiency. I wonder how effective vit supplements bought at a grocery store are-am I better off going to a health food store??
Also-we are really having issues with Tabitha's weight. She is 14 mos old, and only weighs 16 lbs, 9 oz. She is very bright, and active (started walking at 10 mos)! and talkative, and seems quite healthy, and the Dr insisted on doing blood tests on her (hardest thing to date I've done, I think, is hold her for that-my tough lil girl didn't cry, but Momma sure did!). All the blood tests came back normal. She of course drinks raw milk, and we have eggs from our own healthy chickens, and our own beef, and chicken, and pork, and we really don't have a lot of "junk" in the house, although, probably more than is recommended in "Nourishing Traditions" LOL! Anyways, I now have the health nurse calling "just to check up" all the time and asking if I need any help with nutrition (even though her suggestion for proteins was cold cuts!!) Add to that that Jesse still isn't talking a whole lot, (will be 3 yrs April 14) and am getting pressure from everyone there too, even though his hearing has tested fine- and anyways, it all combines to make me feel like a number one failure as a Mom!
Anyways, this has kinda turned into an essay! Any help would be appreciated! (Joann-I REALLY need a copy of Real Food! ;D )
