I am a first timer, and so is my two yearold cow. I am trying to milk once a day. Once I have her in the stanchion she lets me milk her (never kicked) She wont let down for me though so I have to let the calf get her going, and I can ony milk one handed (so the bucket does not get tipped over!) So by the time he is done with her I only get one teat and only about one quart of milk. I tryed tying the calf up beside her this morning after her got her to let down, but the calf was so worked up that she would not let me milk. He kept running into her! To night I had both cows up to the barn but the calves stayed out in the pasture (one km away) before I could shut the gate they were gone!
I cant herd them, they arnt scared of me, I have been bringing them to the barn at night since I got them at a year old. But the bucket does not do the trick any more.
Did I mention that at night I am trying to put the two calves in with one cow, and the same cow that I milk in the morning is on the other side of the barn?
My husband wont help, I have no family or friends that can help, the farm has been left to its own for 20 years, and I have 3 kids.
I want to give up, I want to kick something! I am soooooooooooo frustrated!
What the heck am I going to do?
I got groceries today and the cost was about a 1/4 more than we are used to! This is some thing that I have to do for my family. I need help, anything, something. Please someone tell me there is a simple solution to this.
The small pasture fence that comes off of the corral is down, the only good fence that we have is the corral fence,
Maybe I should just make them stay in there in stead of letting them out to pasture? How long would I have to leave them in there before they get the idea to go to the barn at night?
