Okay, I’ve been reading the 911 post, and others that have recently posted about this same topic, but it’s still as clear as mud to me!
Blossom(jersey/Guernsey cross) will be calving any day now, I actually thought she would last night but she fooled me, and I thought I had 2 more weeks to prepare, so we are at 45 days dry. I hoping for more… that’s my fault, I should have dried her off sooner but I kept second guessing myself.
This is blossoms second calf, first lactation she was giving 4 1/2 - 5 gallons a day. She looks absolutely huge this time and I’m worried about milk fever and ketosis.
Her mom never had any issues, but she wasn’t as high of a producer.
I’ve never had a cow have either of these, and I’m terrified that blossom will and I don’t feel prepared at all! And the only vet we have in our area only does farm emergency visit on Tuesday and Thursday😬
I have a IV bottle of cmpk, and one of glucose, and I have went ahead and given her a tube of the cmpk in her feed Monday night to get some extra into her, I have begun to up her feed, since the weekend, but I’m afraid to up it much because of how large her udder is, I’m afraid I’ll miss the balance between to much and not enough and Jack her up all the way around, if that makes sense… she has been out on really good pasture since I dried her off, lots of fescue and clover with some sowed oats in it.
IF the vet has bovikalc, should I go ahead and give her a bolus, do I need to also get selenium and Vit E? I will add molasses to her this morning.
I feel like I’m panicking but I don’t want to, I want to just have a plan and clear information and instructions on what to do!
I’ve had cows freshen before, she was born here, and I was with her last April when she freshened, but I guess because shes more of a heavy producer than I’ve ever had freshen, I’m afraid I’ll lose her from my own ignorance.
