I’m extremely disappointed…I’d give up about the entire herd just to have this one heifer calm
and be friendly. She is Peatrice’s (Peas) daughter and Applelonia’s niece. She will most likely be the last I will have in that line - I don’t think Peas will be bred again - not a for sure thing but it’s looking like retirement might be best.
Peakalika was raised by Peas. I’m regretting not bottle feeding her. But I remind myself bottle feeding is no guarantee a heifer will be friendly and pleasant…(I think of Flower 😬 - she’d pin her ears and grind her teeth almost every time after bottle feeding she disliked it so much - she was highly crabby and unpleasant and didn’t want anyone to touch her, it was just who she was from early on). So I look at Peakalika and wonder is she similar…no matter how she had been raised would she have been like this…
Peas is so friendly - dog like in temperament…I just assumed her calf would be calm and friendly or would have that high probability of being so. Kind of like Iris and Peppermint …I’ve been around them since day one when Peppermint was born ~ she’s friendly …a spit fire but that’s just her natural way of being 🙂…but she’s used to me and can be touched all over, comes when called…no issues. Peakalika has been tense, flighty around people from day one.
Randalls temperament seems very hit and miss …unpleasant cows can have naturally friendly calves …nice cows can have crazy calves. It’s all over the board.
Peakalika is just …just …so tense and acts like a feral animal almost 🙁
Weaning started last week.
I figured okay maybe finally she might come around. Get her away from the herd - one on one. She’s extra unhappy as she’s in the barn for the time being…and turn out area but away from the herd.
She will take hay from my hands but other than that just the most skittish, flighty cow I’ve had by far. She wants to bolt and try to jump over stall walls…thankfully she hasn’t been successful in clearing the wall yet. If I put my hand up on the stall wall and I have something in my hand it’s like she freaks out and bolts and wants to get away.
Her preferred stance if inside and if I’m near …back or corner of stall head down. It’s not a head down to charge forward - I’ve seen no signs of aggressiveness but rather she’s scared and wants to be 500 feet away from me.
Any hope to get her calm and able to be handled? If so, how should I proceed working with her?
