Hello, I have a cow who has confirmed staff a mastitis. I'm trying to take the herbal and nutritional route of curing this but it doesn't seem to be working. I spoke with a holistic vet who prescribed some homeopathics which I I'm not able to obtain in time so shipping says they won't get here until May and due to my location of where I live in North Dakota I cannot find any of this specific homeopathics. He recommended that I use hepar sulf and pyrogenium . So it took his other advice and I've been doing fire cider drenched into her about two tablespoons twice a day as well as using DMSO on her udder mixed with tea, tree oil, oregano, oil and thyme oil. I also use the iodine to clean her udder and teats and try to milk out as much as I can. This morning when I was milking her there was a terrible smell coming out of her udder. She doesn't make really anything out of that quarter I'm thinking maybe drying her up on that udder with chlorhexidine might be the best for her, although I don't want to cause her massive amounts of pain even though she's already in a lot of pain. I'm worried that I'm never going to get this cleared up because it is in all of her quarters. When I mentioned this to the vet he said that that's a is not that big of a deal like people think it is and that as long as her other quarters are working properly and there's no group or anything coming out that it's not a big deal, that sometimes small amounts of staph a are just present now. Now I don't know how much of this is true because I don't know this that very well. He's from North Carolina. He seemed to know a lot and has his own dairy cows and treats cafe with his own cows. But I'm wondering if my cow is too far gone. I bought her with this condition. Unaware what was going on. The person I bought her from lied to me and said that she was completely healthy and had no mastitis issues at all and that the reason her udder looked oddly shaped was because the calf was nursing on her. I should have been more persistent when questioning. That is my fault and I am reaping the consequences everyday. I took her to the vet and got her antibiotics in the beginning. She had two shots of exceed within 2 months and nothing helped so I thought I would try the holistic approach but nothing seems to be helping. It actually looks a lot worse. Will she dry up on her own in that quarter or do I need to use the chlorhexidine? And if I use the chlorhexidine will it kill the staff and the abscess that have formed in her udder or is this a lost cause? Should I just put her down? She is raising a healthy calf. I don't think he's nursing off of that quarter because it's always engorged and disgusting and I'm sure he would not prefer that one.
