Hi, everybody! Great to be here! Here is a little about myself-
I have LOVED cows ever since I was little, despite a very close call with a neighbor's bull with my brother (if he'd had horns, we more than likely wouldn't be here). I was 7 at the time, and my brother was 9. We had gone into the field after our bloodhound, forgetting Mom's warning "NEVER ever go into the back field with the cows!" Although I am still intimidated by bulls, I love cows and calves. My parents both grew up working on a dairy farm, so cows must be in my blood I REALLY REALLY REALLY want a milk cow, but milking twice a day EVERY day would be difficult to accomplish. We have the land and a barn, just need to fence it, and we could have a cow. If it were me alone, I'd go for it! But, I am 15 and of course live with my parents and 3 siblings. With everyone's different schedules, everyone would have to make an effort to be here for milking times, and they are not as willing to sacrifice for a cow as I am. The closest I have ever come to owning a cow was raising a few bottle calves when I was 13. I was heartbroken when we had to sell them after they were weaned.
The main reason for a cow, is the fresh clean milk/butter/cheese. etc. that I know what is in it. I love milk and dairy products, but it comes from the store and every time I eat/drink it, I wonder what I am really eating/drinking. The hormones, antibiotics, and steroids in it should be enough to make anybody worried. I am sure that that stuff could be linked to obesity, cancer, and probably a ton of other problems as well. It can't be good for you, no way!
I AM going to own a milk cow one of these days. I have lurked this board for a long time, and the main reason I became a member is so I can see the pictures in the photos section. I am here to learn as much as I can about the animals so that I will be ready for one when I get one, whenever that may be. (I still haven't totally given the thought up of getting one soon, maybe in a year or so, after I get my license it would be a lot easier for me to be here to milk at the right times, without affecting my family so much)
I am blessed to have other animals though, I currently have rabbits (2 new litters born the past couple of weeks, and another due the 25th!) for meat (and yes, I clean them myself come butcher time, although I let my brother or dad do the killing, I could do it if I had to, but would rather let them do it), chickens for eggs and meat (and fun, I love the chickens!) a Jack Russell Terrier, and a Tennessee Walking horse named Cocoa (he is being kept at another farm, as the acerage we live on now isn't fenced). I love my animals so much, I can't imagine life without my critters. I could save myself a lot of time and work if I just sold them, but I wouldn't dream of it. Instead, I wish I could add to it, but dad says no Well I guess I better close this looong intro before you get bored- if you haven't already Can't wait to "meet" you all!
