Hello,
I'm brand new to the board and am a wanna-be cow owner. I'm originally from California but now live in the Boise, Idaho area. I am married, have a 2 year old little girl and an ever growing vegetable garden. I recently became a full time stay at home mother and am having an absolute blast!
I have a keen interest in nutrition but my view of 'healthy' has drastically changed this year. I used to buy into the health food store/soy protein/low fat dogmas. When I was 15, I read Susan Powter's books, McDougall Plan, (and many more low fat books) about how eating fat will make you fat - so I lived fat deprived for years! I slowly added back in olive oil and what I thought was healthy oil (canola). Then came the two watershed books: "Fast Food Nation" and Nina Planck's "Real Food." I've been "devouring" everything I can get my hands on about real down home nutrition, including Weston Price information. I'm delighted to report that I love full fat milk, greek yogurt and butter! (My wonderful sister told me after she ate something that I cooked in chicken fat, "whatever you're reading, keep reading it! I love this new you!")
My initial interest in having a cow was finding a source of clean, raw milk since Idaho is not very raw milk friendly. I'm also crazy about animals. My husband and I intend to move to a more rural area (Star, ID) in the next couple of years where we can have a couple pastured cows and lots of chickens. I consider joining this board like working toward a master's degree in 'keeping a family cow!'
After living in the city in California for years, we yearn for a slower life where we can raise our children in a safe, nurturing environment. My brother-in-law was raised on a farm and I love hearing the details (even the unglamourous ones) about the homestead experience. I look forward to being a part of this group!
