I am regretting keeping that bull in with the cows last year and thinking "he can't be fertile yet" ....so glad I'll be going back to AI ....I do so much better with that! I know the due date and can be a helicopter cow owner!
How cold can brand new calves handle? Windchills? If they are snowed on at birth? etc....assuming all goes well, calf gets up, drinks, momma licks them off.
But if calf doesn't get up right away, how soon do things go bad and at what temp - what is the danger zone of outside temperatures for a brand new calf?
Four of the six are due December - January... I think...this is based on what I remember seeing for heats...but, it's possible one could have been bred and then lost a pregnancy within the first month or two and he rebred them. Or I missed something ...missed a heat/breeding...
Recently, the weather has been fantastic for December! Such a huge blessing!! Extended forecast is upper 20s, 30s, 40s!! But, if weather turns to regular/average winter temps we could have well below zero, snow, winds...bitter cold.
Iris I can lock into a stall if needed. The others are not comfortable with being locked up. They will come into the barn but want the outside door open ...their previous home they never went into a building - but the winters there were in the low temps where 20s. They will go into their run-ins when it's super cold, otherwise they want to be outside. I suspect they will want to calve outside. Iris probably will as well.
Was hoping to be at the farm house by now, but there were some setbacks...seems like construction is filled with setbacks! Plumber had some issues at other jobs so we are waiting on the plumber to come back.
I'm worried if calving happens outside of when people are there or in between checks that calf/calves could easily die in the cold/snow.
I'm very much used to calves being in a stall all tucked into dry bedding and good ventilation but no drafts. Field calves in the cold has me in a state of great concern.
