Short story: Monday night our 2.5 yo Anatolian attacked our neighbor's dog right in front of him. According to his account he let his dog out for the night and our dog ran up and attacked. Ugly fight -- about ten minutes long -- both dogs covered in blood. It was so vicious he couldn't interfere, but rather came to us and told us to get our dog. We have since gotten rid of her (someone took care of her for us). When we cleaned up our dog, there was not a wound on her. The neighbor's dog, as far as we know, has a large gash on her face, but seems to be fine otherwise.
Longer story: Our dog has never hurt anything. She's been super good about barking at night to keep coyotes away -- we got her to protect our sheep and have had her over a year. She messes with our cat, but it's play chasing; I've even witnessed the cat attacking her, coming out and clawing at her face, and the dog just sitting there and taking it. She has had a strange relationship with the neighbor's dogs (two three-way mixes). They have an invisible fence, so are limited in coming over, but they sit at the limits, and stare at our dog while she was cooped in the pasture for the day. When we let our dog out for the night, she would go over to their house, sometimes eat their food, sometimes tantalize them by sitting just outside their invisible fence line, but there has never been any signs of actual aggression. The neighbor's place is pretty close. From the back pasture behind the barn where we were keeping the dog during the day (she would roam too far and sometimes dig holes in several of the neighbor's yards), the neighbor's house is about 30-40 feet up the hill. We don't think that she's up there for very long each night, as she spends most of the time behind our house facing the chicken coop or pasture areas.
We've been trying to make sense of this whole situation. Why would she have randomly made such an attack?
