This is one I haven't had to deal with before.
Darling little baby Joe has decided that Molly's hay manger in the barn is his private bathroom. AND his bed. I've caught him sleeping in there before, and thought it was cute, BUT, I saw him standing in there, peeing, one day. Yuk! I chased him out, thinking it was a one-off kind of thing, but then yesterday, he was in there peeing again. I chased him out again! Then I felt around in the hay and it was more damp than it should have been, and warm. Ugh.
I got the hay fork and started forking out the hay (I had been wondering why Molly wasn't eating as much as I thought she should). I got halfway to the bottom, and there was HEAT billowing up at me, and on the very bottom, it was black and hot and icky. HOLY COW. I cleaned the entire thing out and tossed the hay out on the ground outside, thanking my lucky stars I realized what was happening and got it out of there before it decided to combust.
I was tired after all that forking, so I sat down to take a break and that little snot climbed back in to finish peeing! I can't keep him out of there without making it inaccessible to Molly for eating, so I guess she's gonna have to eat outside, on the ground. As soon as we get the cross fence tightened up, I'll start letting them both out during the day. Maybe part of his problem is he's bored.
I need to remember to take my camera out one of these mornings, too. In spite of being mischievous, he's awfully cute, and he's learning to eat pellets. When I'm finished milking, Molly is USUALLY finished eating her pellets, but if there are any left in the dish, I'll set it out on the floor for her to finish while I'm cleaning up the stanchion area. Every time I do that now, Joe comes up and sticks his dainty little nose in the dish next to Molly's, and he's been tasting the pellets. I guess he decided they're good, because yesterday he actually ate a bunch of them, rather than just rolling them around in his mouth and spitting them out. This is a GOOD thing. If I can get HIM hooked on Kow Krack as bad as his mom, I won't have any trouble getting him to come when I call in the evening when it's time to go to bed.
If I could just figure out how to keep him from peein' in his mom's food... Everything would be perfect.
