Hi guys, my name is Mike. I live in Northern California. So last year I did something kind of impulsive and got a three day old jersey dairy calf from ucdavis, they have a cow/dairy program.
anyways fast forward, the little guy isn’t so little anymore. I hate to admit but I was to scared to band him myself, worried about health issues or complications. I live kind of way outa the wayside up in the mountains and I’ve not been able to get a vet out here to band him or castorate because none will come this far. Unfortunately I don’t have a horse trailer or livestock trailer to take him.
Now he is nearly 9 months old, so I doubt I’ll ever get it done. Anyhow Ive totally bonded with this a baby bull calf and I’m his daddy.
so please bare with me here, I feel bad for him because he doesn’t have any playmates except my dog, yup the bull was barking and making weird sounds while playing with the dog…. lol;
anyhow, I might have gotten myself into a pickle here because I’m reading Jersey bulls have the worst temperament and can be deadly etc etc. while i haven’t had any problems or issues yet, I’m wondering is it possible since I raised this baby bull calf that he will stay nice and friendly?
I mean I did buy him originally for eating but like I said it was sort of impulsive and now I’m thinking maybe just keep him for breeding instead of eating…… lol
so another question I have is, a rancher down the mountain has three Dexter cows for sale, they are about six years old and all have had calves and might be bred back. My question is, can I put my jersey bull calf with those Dexter cows and hope he breeds them in the future or is that a bad idea since dexters are on the smaller side?
I tried to add a picture of my bull calf but again 8m a newbie and can’t figure it out but I was able to add to my profile pic.
