I have 2 culls that due to personalities I chose to not breed this year. I breed via AI but I did have a really nice homebred bull that I had hoped to use on almost everything this year. I put cows in heat in with him for 3 days and then move them back out to pasture. After the first six cows came back into heat I realized something is not working with the bull. I had my husband breeding soundness evaluate him and he did not pass by any stretch of the imagination. He had mushy testicles which is usually indicative of an injury and they may recover in four to five months but I did not have 4- 5 months and since he was supposed to be used as a bull and then sold as a bul we opted to band him and put him in with the cows and butcher him - which we did
One of my culls is one of my nicest cows. Every year she and I had an agreement and the agreement was she had to let me AI her without any fuss. She is not the nicest temperament cow, but I kept her because of her conformation. Every other year I would say out this is the year she goes and every year she would let me walk up to her, put a halter on and lead her out to be ai. That's all I needed from her. No other human contact the rest of the year. This year, when I went to catch her she got big eyed spazzed out jumped three fences and took the entire herd with her. I told the kids enough she's getting eaten no matter how sad it is. I track heats and mark them on the calendar and she came in to heat six days after we put the banded bull back into the field with the cows. .
Guess who never came back into heat. As I was butchering animals Monday ( yesterday), I had my husband preg check her the day before and guess who's bred buy a banded for bull who produced almost no viable sperm...
We checked another cow who's due to be culled, she's also bred. 17 days after the bull was banded he bred her....
I actually have no issues butchering bred cows and the one is still going to be butchered November the 25th. But all the literature says the likelihood of a banded animal getting it cow bred very low and after 2 weeks 0% chance. I have nothing else in this field or my property who could have bred these two cows!!
