I finally got the ingredients for my organic soy-free feed and ground my first batch today (I have a CS bell #60 or 61A?). I think the grind was good, but the molasses amount was very low. I diluted it with water and tripled the amount in order to get it spread throughout tomorrows ration. I am very dubious that she will eat it. I have read on here that neither peas nor sunflowers are very palatable and they make up over 50% of the ration! I was very excited about the formula that Fertrell came up with for me when i first got it. But I didn't realize how little molasses was in it. I meant to mix it with her normal commercial ration and slowly switch her, but I ran out of the commercial. I took a handful of the new feed out to her when I went to collect her calf for the night. She was excited to see the bucket, but definitely not excited about the feed. She is a one month fresh first calf heifer and has been milking very nicely with good manners and let down. She expects me to take the calf at night (she was raised that way and thinks this is what all cows/calves do apparently). But she is only 23 months old and I expect she will pitch a fit in the morning. I'm not sure she is ever going to eat this feed. I'm including the recipe (I posted this before when i first got it). I'm sure I can add a lot more molasses, and I read all the posts on here I could find about how to mix it in, which is why I diluted it and mixed it by hand just or one feeding at a time. But I still pretty dubious about how much molasses it would take to get her to eat this. It doesn't smell palatable to me like regular sweet feed does. But then, grass and silage and other thigs cows eat don't either. Love to hear recommendations on this. Will she ever eat it?? How might I modify it? thanks!
Edited to add I did not grind a ton. Just moved the decimal point--so 6 lbs of peas and 4.5 lbs of sunflower meal, etc. I converted the minerals etc to ounces.
