I just found a young farmer about 10 minutes away who is growing grains and grinding/mixing feed. He has oats and wheat that aren't sprayed. He has barley that I didn't ask about. (Of course he has corn and soy too, and his soy is minimally sprayed, but he doesn't roast his own, so it goes in with everyone elses at a big commercial mill). He also has black oil sunflower seeds that aren't sprayed. He will grind some grains for me. Others I have to grind myself, which isn't a problem as we own an old belt driven hammer mill and mom has a large electric mill we used to use for chicken feed. So this is what is available. I would like to hear of any recipes for a dairy feed. I would have to order fertrell or some such mineral mix. he has molasses, but I'd rather not use it. Jersey heifer due to freshen in September was dam raised and never had more than a taste of grain as a treat. She has a high grazing merit sire, but not like a NZ bloodline. Her mother is 10 and very very thin--and I've been playing around with what to feed her for some time (other threads). She is sore moving--I think the problem is in her left hip. The families, including me, who drink this milk are very clean, organic and all got health issues when I started feeding beet pulp. 100% quit taking milk. So in that thread, one person suggested oat, wheat bran and barley plus whatever supplements. Don't have wheat bran, but 50# bag of wheat berries is only $8. So the grain farmer cum feed mill guy left me a note suggesting I see if black oil sunflower seed can be used in my mix to boost protein. So advice please and recipes. Thanks!
