In another post many people recommended i give heiferlump beet pulp rather than corn to boost calories without driving production or causing inflamation (thread was Heiferlump is starving). But I lost ALL my "customers". I don't sell milk, but I do have several families that pick up milk from me for free. They all quit since the beet pulp. No one says it tastes bad, but it was causing health problems. they get my milk to avoid health problems, but since Heiferlump has been on beet pulp, they have all those problems again. They are buying milk from other raw producers that are less convenient. So I totally believe them and the fact that they ALL quit at the same time says this is a real problem. I did not tell anyone I put Heiferlump on beet pulp. One woman asked if I was feeding a lot of grain. I told her I had added beet pulp instead of corn. So now I've told everyone and they want to know when Heiferulmp's daughter freshens because they would rather get milk from me (why not, it is free and very good--or was very good til we added beet pulp). Hubby says it tastes a bit different, but not appreciably so--no more than it changes with stage of lactation and everyone claims it tastes the same. But the problem is in what it does to their bodies/digestion. I'm not selling milk, so losing "customers" is no big deal. And I don't drink the milk because I'm still lactose intolerant (I make butter, cheese, kefir, yogurt, creme fraiche, etc. etc. and clabber the skim for chickens, so having a cow is still important even if one doesn't drink the milk). But it does hurt my feelings that my reputation has suffered. I kind of liked all the praise and demand from my milk, and it was nice to just bottle it and give it away somedays rather than processing. Y'know? So has anyone else had this experience with beet pulp? And is there a better alternative?
