Hi! I’m fairly new to this (I think I’ve posted once or twice before around the time we got our cow, but not much)...we got our first cow (a Jersey, named Daisy) in October. She had her first calf a week later. We had a pretty rough start but she’s finally settled in very well and we’re all getting more relaxed with each other! We’re calf sharing, and started separating the calf overnight two weeks ago (at 7 weeks old). They can see each other the whole time and seem to do just fine with that setup. Daisy doesn’t seem to be a heavy producer; even separating at night, and bringing the calf to help with letdown after we’ve gotten all we can, we’ve only gotten about a gallon and a quart at the most during one milking. She’s very good at holding back though. That’s not my main question; just saying she’s not a heavy producer so I don’t think that’s the issue....
She has suddenly started this loud, growly, bawling. She woke us up very early yesterday and today, about 45 minutes before normal milking time. Was fairly restless while milking (stuck her foot in the bucket for the first time yesterday!! Merry Christmas to us! Lol.) and really didn’t settle down too much after. She normally only moos when she wants something (water is low, needs hay, ready to be fed, etc). She did it all yesterday evening and again this evening. Schedule hasn’t changed; we have upped her feed a bit in the last couple weeks because she started looking kind of skinny. We’re still learning what it takes to keep condition on her. Appears to be a lot. :/ anyway, I’m just wondering if something could be wrong. She doesn’t appear to have mastitis, I think we’d notice a smell if it was ketosis (right?), I thought heat was just a few hours...
Just looking for some advice! Thanks!!
