Some of you might get a smile out of the registration papers for the dam of the new mule we bought last week. Since we have moved from performance horses to mules we are much less interested in pedigree - for mules (at least for us) it's more like the old saying 'pretty is, as pretty does'. (Same for my cows, btw!)
We have been looking for a 4th mule for a while now, I am too old to want to put the time in on a young one (would have enjoyed that back in the day, but not now) so we have to sort through the trashy ones to get what we need. Found one in Bayfield, CO that sounded good - 15 yrs old. Long ways for us to travel but the girl that owned her had a library of videos and pictures that we could get a pretty good idea of what we were getting... she had videos of her being packed, ridden, shod, worming her, teeth floated (who videos that? Ha!) on and on for the 2.5 years she had owned her.
So we head up to Bayfield where we happen to have a good friend, nice dinner, spend the night with them and head out early to see the mule. It's COLD. The girl saddles and rides her for us. By then we are frozen, don't even get on her, but she looks just like we expected. She is a little too much for the girl when she wants to ride by herself so that's why she is selling. Somewhere during the conversation the girl mentions her dam was appendix registered (Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse) We pay her, she hands us a folder of copious notes, brand inspection, and copy of the dam's registration. We load her up and drive home. Didn't bother to look at any of it at the time.
We get back to our more comfortable climate, a few rides in and Mabel the mule seems to be exactly what we expected, she will fit right in here. Finally sort through the paperwork 3 days later and to our great surprise, find a royally bred dam that goes back to some of the most famous bloodlines for racing and foundational performance horses that I have ever seen on one set of papers! Ha! I'm trying to envision the eccentric owner deciding to breed his expensive mare to a donkey! We got the biggest kick out of seeing those papers...
For those who are more into fancy bred cows (or dogs), Bold Ruler was the sire of Secretariat and the grand sire of Seattle Slew, both being triple crown winners. On the bottom Three Bars and Go Man Go were some of the most famous bloodlines for foundational performance quarter horses, on the track as well as the arena.
HAHA!!
These pics came from the previous owner - I liked the one coming off the rock!
