My Jersey x Normande 4 yr old cow, 4 months bred, was having an intense colic episode earlier today.
This happened once before, some of you might remember back in May I posted pics of her having surgery at the vet school in Glendale. She was 10 days fresh then, I thought she had a DA and was able to get her scheduled at the vet school, made the 8 hr round trip with 4 hrs for the time with the vet/students. They did exploratory surgery because they couldn't find indications of DA and concluded that it was a probable uterine torsion since there was remaining fluid in the uterus that hadn't expelled. Basically a ball of fluid that could have twisted. Her intense colic episode was over by the time we had arrived at the vet clinic but we lived a long ways away so we did the exploratory and while there, stitched the abomasum just because we were in there.
So now, same symptoms, 4 months bred... If she had continued in the pain much longer I was prepared to put her down - not gonna do more surgery (on a girl I really like) if this is going to repeat itself. We were going to do a Hail Mary try at a roll so we watched a few videos... feeling much in over our heads we went out to do *something* and she was down in the stall quivering in pain. We made her get up to position her better and she walked over to the water trough and drank a little then started to relax a bit. So I watched her over the next hour and she continued to improve but tail still a bit kinked and walked gingerly. The colic episode has seemingly passed as it did before. Maybe us getting her up roughly? Who knows, anyway, assuming she has made it through this, I wonder what the chances are the calf survived? Does the torsion cut off supplies to the calf? Does anyone have any insight on this situation?
Repeated torsion doesn't look good on my girl's record... :/ She just made her way to the top of my cull list and I just hate that...
