I've been looking for a lost calf for a couple weeks now. This weekend I found a stripped down skeleton, still wet and smelly. There is a skull with attached vertebrae and ribs. It looks smaller than expected for the calf in question, but I think it is the calf but would like confirmation. I see a lot of deer skeletons in the area, but I think the skulls are narrower but the front part of the skull might of broken off. The remains were found on a steep slope, at the base I found a tangled ball of white tail hair with a few purplish red stains. Looked more like you'd expect from berries stains but again not sure. I can post pictures. The calf was polled. Is there something specific to cows to look to differentiate from a deer skull? I even have a large cow skull and old deer skulls but just don't know what to look for if there are no antlers or horns. Incidentally 2 hours after I found the bones a coyote howled on the same ridge I found the bones I think might be the missing calf. What's really odd I put hamburger meat, an egg and 3 chicken nuggets and set up a wild life camera to see what's out there and nothing took the bait. On a side note I'm keeping all my calves in the barn until I figure out what's going on. We have 3 deer that tend to stay on our property. One has a half dollar size chunk of skin on its hip standing straight up and another red spot on one rear leg. Got pictures of the deer injuries as well. One of my 3 deer does has a single unicorn point in the center of her forehead. I hope it's not her, but I think it is. She is pretty tame and easy to photograph. Finding deer bones is pretty common on our property.
