Today DH was giving shots to a sick calf and handed the needles back to me. I accidentally stuck a finger on one. I had about 3 spare seconds to squeeze blood out and then had to get back to work. I was pressing something against the calf making a make-shift squeeze chute and then needed to lead said calf who was wearing a halter for the first time to a new pen.(a tiny rodeo) About 15 minutes later I swabbed the pricked area with alcohol. Now hours later I'm starting to worry. This is got to happen all the time I'd think, but dirty needles I've heard are dangerous. Should I go to a doctor or wait and see? The calf probably never was vaccinated, and has BRD and most likely everything a calf can get going to an auction and being resold.
Also, one other question. We had taken another calf from the same group to the vet this morning and he sent back 2 syringes filled with something for the one I didn't take. One clear the other filled with a clear yellow liquid. The yellow shot didn't go in and splattered on her side. What might that be? There was only one vet on duty and he was interrupted twice while handling my calf and the syringes were handed to me by a helper. I'm not going to get the bill for days and their office seems understaffed and overwhelmed right now so I loathe to call them and ask what was in the syringes. Normally there would of been a detailed explanation but I not unhappy, I'm glad they were open for a few hours. Holidays are the worse time to get sick and there were a lot of interruptions as this poor guy was the only one on duty.
