Ellie my MS, 7 mos. bred was limping the other day. I watched her and would have sworn she was lame on her front right. When I took a walk in the pasture I caught her laying down and checked her foot. Nothing obvious. It seems her toes are a bit long and touching slightly, but nothing terrible.
Yesterday I asked the horse farrier friend who did Paprika when she had awful foot rot if he would come trim her front toes. He agreed to come at 1:00 today.
DH got her shut in the corral yesterday so we'd make sure she was up close. Their hay bale is currently about 100 yards from the barn and apparently she's been walking back and forth at least once per day for water.
Last night I go out and she is lame on her back right. it is very obviously swollen above her hoof for about 5-6 inches. Sorry, my cow anatomy sucks. She's holding it off the ground, too. When I put my hand on her hip to run my hand down her leg, she began waving it around and obviously did not want me touching it. so I decided today wasn't the day to get kicked in the head.
I think working on a back leg will be really hard for him. I talked with DH about tying her good back foot to her halter to keep her down if she's down when Nate comes. We discussed the stanchion and what to expect there. Using the chute if necessary, which would make it impossible to trim her front feet.
I'm wondering what could be going on.
Ellie is also the one that is losing her night vision. So now I'm wondering if due to her lame front foot she stumbled and twisted her rear one? Either way, she's staying in the corral for a while.
I gave her 9 ml of flunuxin this morning hoping to help out with general pain and her visit if it's uncomfy.
Any thoughts?
