We had a wonderful Anatolian Shepherd for five or six years. Until last year, she’d stay inside the 2-acre fence and did a great job protecting our chickens and turkeys. At some point we left a gate open here or there, she’d run the land and be gone (we have 53 acres) and then she’d come back. But then she started escaping by jumping over or digging. She’d kill a raccoon at the front of the property and patrol. I had no problem with it, but my husband hated it. He said she was scaring away the deer. She also got a raccoon at the neighbor’s across the street. It must’ve been a fight because her collar was right next to the dead body.
Anyway, it was a thorn in our marriage, so I decided to re-home her. It happened the guy that came to check our AC had just lost his Anatolian Shepherd to getting hit by a car because his wife left a gate open. He had a perfect setup for her where she’d also get attention and good fencing. It’s working out beautifully. We traded the dog for services.
Well, just as I thought, heads are coming off, like I thought. We’ve lost three chickens since she left.
We have a three-board fence with wire fencing stapled to it. I forget what it’s called. We have a hot wire up top that we never turn on. Even when it’s on, chickens jump over and go where they want. There’s always a handful that won’t stay in. But the raccoon is actually coming INTO the fenced area. With no dog, it feels hopeless.
So I’m about to go out now and walk the fence. The side they come in on is the woods, so they come undetected. I was thinking a hot wire ten inches out from the fence, 8 inches off the ground, so nothing can crawl under, or grab the fence to climb over the fence? What do y’all do for raccoons or possums with no dog?!?!
