So I feel extremely bad about this.
I picked up one of the barn cats on Sunday and he’s a complete skeleton! I don’t pick them up very often. Usually it’s scratches while they’re in bed and watching them around the yard. Now I may just pick them up all the time, no matter what they think!!
Two is about a year and a half old. I have this photo of him from Sept 23 when he looks alright. He’s just got such fluffy hair you can’t tell by looking at him now, how skinny he is. Although now I can absolutely see rougher looking, unhappy hair.
The first thing that came to my mind was extreme worms so the vet put some Profender out for me to pick up which he got this morning. Prior to this they were all dewormed just for round worms, I believe at the beginning of September.
Sunday night I let him come in the house and have some higher quality cat food instead of just barn cat food. He stuffed his face around 830 but then proceeded to vomit up a fountain in the middle of the night. Each night I’ve brought him in to eat a smaller amount, but he always vomits sometime, hours later. This isn’t not a symptom of worms but it’s got me worried it’s something else.
And after the exorbitant amount of money I spent on Fuzz last year I’m hesitant on if I want to take him in to the vet to see. Maybe it is just worms? Then I panic that maybe he’s blocked or something
I haven’t seen him poop, barn cats you rarely see do anything, but I’m starting days off tomorrow so I’m going to isolate him with his own litter box and see what I can see. He does have an appetite except after he vomits when you can tell he’s feeling crummy. He is drinking. Haven’t been able to tell if he’s peeing but his bladder isn’t full. He does have poo crustys on his bum but no sign of diarrhea. He felt empty this morning, maybe a little bit of poo in the colon.
I’m sure they can lose weight very fast and he’s outside so I don’t know how long he’s been vomiting. If he was blocked would he still be alive even? How long can I expect before seeing improvement from the wormer? I’m thinking of making him some liquid broth just to get food in him that he maybe doesn’t puke up.
He’s so terrible I’m half afraid he’ll be dead any time I get home. But he still purrs and wants attention.
I know a few on here have the ear of professionals, or are professional ears, does this sound like something more serious than worms? Or it’s worms out of control? I’m also now worried if he’s got other things happening because he’s obviously gotten so malnourished.
