I decided to slaughter my Wagyu bull afterall on the 28th. My question, can I take him to the vet beforehand and get some straws out of him on the way to the processor? The vet is 15 minutes away but it can be over an hour wait as it's first come first served. The processor is 5 minutes from the bull's home but from the vet it will be another 15 minutes. The slaughter time is 11 am. The vet opens at 8. The reason I want to do it all on the same day is I'm on my own loading the bull on the slaughter date and my plan is to have him walk into the trailer by himself. I will feed him in the trailer a couple of days beforehand. That trick won't work twice in two weeks. I don't have to worry about loading at the vets. My DH wants to use him to breed the two Wagyus we have, they are already bred for this year but it would be nice to have some straws for the future. Would my plan be too traumatic for the bull? Right now it's a short 3/4 mile trip to the processor. I guess I should also ask how many straws do you get with one try? Is this something that usually works? I wish I thought to get straws a lot sooner, but have never done that before and can't make a decision as I don't know if it's traumatic or not. My vets run cows all day long and are very fast and efficient. I can always order straws from other bulls but this one does seem extra nice but he is unproven. Recently I saw an advertisement for his grandfather's straws for $4,000. That bull was the only Japanese champion brought to the US. The reds are still uncommon but I can buy straws for $35 from great bulls. I just can't keep the bull as I have nowhere to safely put him and sold most of my beef cows that would of kept him safely occupied.
