Sapphire calved in June. Easy calving, she deposited her bull calf in the field and walked away from him. Wouldn't let him near her. But she's been relatively easy to milk, despite really tiny teats. No objections
The calf, Hamilton, has been bottle fed, growing nicely. Mum is being milked 2XD, nice milk (NZ Jersey X MS) Two months after all efforts failed to make them realize they should like each other, I put him back out with the herd, still bottle feeding. She knew him- really funny that she came across the field alone when she heard him and sniffed him, but no way on partaking of the udder. Strange.
The AI man is incredibly good and bred a little more than three weeks ago to a jersey bull, nothing special. A1/A2. The NZ semen I ordered hadn't gotten here yet, missed it by a day. But she went back into heat Friday and I was excited about the chance at giving her the NZ semen. the AI man came back this time with my NZ straws which I got at great expense and great effort. I do believe the NZ jerseys are better graziers and I like their size and demeanor. High percentage of A2 including the bull I picked a dozen straws from. He used one on her, perfectly timed I thought , after standing heat
To resurrect a thread here from 2010 about post A1 mestrus bleeding, I have to say Im concerned. She bled off all right, but it was fairly heavy and bright red blood.
So the fact that post A1 bleeding means only that they ovulated isn't the whole story.
If there is no signal from the fertile egg, the uterus will slough off and reset, so there is a bright red discharge that is more significant than the release from the follicle after successful breeding.
I hope I'm wrong, that really there wasn't that much blood and it wasn't as bright as I thought. But every time I see that I end up with an open cow. And Im wondering why, after two well timed breeding episodes using different semen, she didn't settle when she's been successfully bred and calved once.
